Donor-Advised Funds: A Smart Way to Give More and Owe Less

A donor-advised fund can save you tax dollars. In an era of evolving federal tax rules, this straightforward charitable vehicle has become one of the most practical tools available for individuals and families who want to support causes they care about while simultaneously reducing their tax burden. By understanding how a donor-advised fund works and how recent legislative changes affect its advantages, donors can turn ordinary generosity into a more efficient financial strategy.

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund, commonly called a DAF, is an account established at a sponsoring public charity such as those offered by major financial institutions or community foundations. The donor makes an irrevocable contribution of cash, publicly traded securities, or other assets to the fund. In return, the donor receives an immediate income-tax deduction for the full amount of the contribution in the year it is made. After the assets are transferred, the donor retains the privilege of recommending grants from the fund to qualified public charities over time. The sponsoring organization handles the administrative work, investment management, and compliance, while the assets inside the account grow free of income and capital-gains taxes.

How the donor-advised fund tax deduction works

The most direct tax savings come from the timing of the deduction. Unlike a conventional check written to a nonprofit, which produces a deduction only in the year the charity receives the money, a contribution to a DAF generates the deduction immediately. This feature is especially valuable in high-income years after a business sale, a large bonus, or the vesting of equity awards when the donor's marginal tax rate is elevated. Cash contributions may be deducted up to 60 percent of adjusted gross income; long-term appreciated assets may be deducted at fair-market value up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income. Any excess may be carried forward for as many as five additional years.

Donating appreciated assets multiplies the benefit

Donating appreciated assets multiplies the benefit. Suppose a donor holds stock purchased years earlier for a modest basis that has risen substantially in value. Selling the shares would trigger capital-gains tax potentially 15 or 20 percent federally, plus the 3.8 percent net-investment-income tax for higher earners, and any applicable state tax. By transferring the shares directly to the DAF, the donor avoids recognizing the gain altogether. The fund may sell the shares tax-free, and the donor claims a deduction equal to the full current market value. The net result is both a larger charitable contribution and a lower personal tax bill than would have been possible by selling first and giving the after-tax proceeds.

What changed in 2026 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

The tax landscape that took effect in 2026 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act has made the strategic use of DAFs even more attractive for many itemizers. Beginning that year, charitable deductions are allowed only to the extent they exceed 0.5 percent of adjusted gross income. Modest annual gifts may fall below this new floor and produce little or no tax benefit. By "bunching" several years' worth of intended contributions into a single large gift to a DAF in a high-income year, a donor can clear the floor efficiently, capture a meaningful deduction, and then recommend grants to favorite charities on a flexible schedule thereafter. The assets continue to grow tax-free inside the fund, further amplifying the eventual philanthropic impact.

Additional advantages beyond the deduction

Additional advantages reinforce the tax savings. Because the contribution removes assets from the donor's estate, it can reduce future estate-tax exposure for those whose estates exceed the applicable exclusion amount. Record-keeping is simplified: the sponsoring organization issues a single contemporaneous written acknowledgment for the initial contribution, and subsequent grant recommendations require no further substantiation by the donor. For donors who prefer to remain anonymous or who wish to involve family members in grant decisions, a DAF offers privacy and educational opportunities that a series of individual checks cannot match.

The limits of a donor-advised fund

Of course, a donor-advised fund is not a universal solution. The contribution is irrevocable; once assets enter the fund, they cannot be returned. Administrative fees apply, typically a modest percentage of assets under management. Contributions to a DAF do not qualify for the limited above-the-line charitable deduction available to non-itemizers (up to $1,000 for single filers or $2,000 for joint filers on cash gifts to operating public charities). High-income taxpayers in the top 37 percent bracket also face a cap that limits the value of itemized deductions, including charitable ones, to 35 cents on the dollar. These constraints underscore the importance of consulting a tax advisor or financial planner before acting.

Is a donor-advised fund right for you?

Nevertheless, for donors who already itemize or who can arrange their giving to do so in selected years, a donor-advised fund remains a powerful mechanism for converting philanthropic intent into tangible tax savings. It allows the donor to claim a deduction when it is most valuable, avoid capital-gains tax on appreciated property, benefit from tax-free growth, and distribute support to charities at a deliberate pace. In short, the simple idea that a donor-advised fund can save you tax dollars is borne out by both the mechanics of the vehicle and the realities of the current tax code. When structured thoughtfully, it enables individuals to give more effectively while keeping more of their hard-earned resources working for the causes and the future they value most.

How to recommend a grant to WISH Ministry

Recommending a grant is generally a brief task within the sponsoring organization's online portal. The donor logs in, selects the option to recommend a grant, and searches for the charity by name or by employer identification number. Because sponsor databases index the IRS registration rather than the common name, it is best to search for the legal name below.

What happens to a grant once it reaches WISH

WISH Ministry deducts nothing from an incoming grant. There is no processing fee, no administrative percentage, and no withholding of any kind. Operating costs are covered separately by private benefactors, so 100 percent of a recommended grant reaches the vetted ministry or missionary the donor names.

This distinction carries particular weight for donor-advised fund giving. The sponsoring organization has already assessed its administrative fee before the grant is disbursed; WISH does not assess a second one on receipt. A grant of $10,000 recommended to a church-planting work in Romania arrives as $10,000.

Every ministry listed by WISH has been reviewed for doctrinal alignment, financial transparency, and demonstrable Gospel work. Reporting is required of each partner, so donors can see the results of their giving.
